Chemex Classic - 6 cups
Undoubtedly one of the most recognizable and elegant coffee makers available. The Chemex was designed in 1941 and has been making delicious coffee ever since.
Its non-porous, heat-resistant glass construction, combined with proprietary, scientifically designed filters, produces coffee with clarity and complexity.
In fact, it's the filters that are the star of the Chemex show. They are 20-30% heavier than other filters and remove even the finest sediment particles. The design of the filter facilitates the proper infusion time by regulating the filtration rate - about a 4 minute brew.
One warning: As the filters are made of heavy paper, they require a full rinse with hot water before brewing to remove any paper taste.
The Chemex is so cool that it has a permanent display in the Museum of Modern Art in New York, and is how James Bond makes his coffee. What other endorsements do you need?
Timemore French Press
If you're like us and love french press coffee but sometimes wish you could leave a little bit of the fines in the pot, then we know you'll appreciate the Timemore french press. It's everything you would expect from a traditional french press, made out of quality heatproof glass, but it has an optional secondary fine mesh stainless steel filter to filter out excess fines or for brewing loose leaf tea. The glass body of the french press can double as an elegant serving carafe, just take out the filter assembly and remove the rubber base.
With a 600ml (20oz) capacity, you can make enough coffee for two or just one really big cup!
Hario V60-02 Ceramic
If you are used to making a pot of coffee even when you want just a cup, then this great little brewer may well be your saviour. Arguably the most popular manual brew method over the past decade, the Hario V60-02 is a newer twist on the classic Melitta cones. There are as many opinions on brew method as there are baristas but, once you have found your favourite, this is one of cheapest and most effective ways to make great coffee at home.
This method, paired with the appropriate filters, is ideal for making single cups of coffee directly into the mug - you can make up to 16oz in one brew - and ensures that you only make the coffee that you need. It's simple to use, easy to clean and, as long as you have good coffee, may make you put your coffee machine away for good.
This Hario V60 is ceramic (prettier and better at retaining heat), but it is also available in clear plastic (BPA-free and shatter resistant), heatproof glass or in metal with a variety of finishes. Whichever you choose, your days of old, microwaved coffee could be over.
Hario Skerton Plus Grinder
Just when you thought Hario couldn't get any cooler, they've gone and upgraded the classic Hario Skerton Coffee Grinder. The new Skerton Plus stabilizes the ceramic burrs with a nifty little plate for a significantly more consistent grind. It's still high capacity so you can brew for everyone and it still won't break the bank.
A hand grinder has always been an essential part of any travel/work kit, and this is one of the best. With a ceramic conical burr set (the bit that grinds the coffee) and a sturdy handle, this will provide you with consistently ground fresh coffee to ensure a delicious caffeinated beverage. As you can easily adjust the grind size, the Skerton's suitable for virtually any brew method, and will protect you from the evils of instant coffee, wherever you are.
